What it is
Duplicati is a free, open-source backup tool that makes encrypted, compressed, incremental backups to cloud storage (S3, B2, Google Drive, FTP, WebDAV). It is a low-cost route to off-site backup with AES-256 and a web interface.
Problems it removes
- You want encrypted offsite backups to cheap cloud storage you already pay for.
- Backups must be incremental to keep bandwidth and storage cost low.
- A single machine or a small set needs simple, scheduled backup.
How administrators use it
- Point Duplicati at S3, Backblaze B2, Google Drive, FTP or WebDAV and set a schedule.
- Let it make AES-256 encrypted, compressed, deduplicated incremental backups.
- Restore files through the web UI and test restores regularly.
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- Free and open source.
- Strong client-side encryption and many cloud backends.
- Low storage and bandwidth use via deduplicated incrementals.
Trade-offs
- Built for files, not full disk images.
- Version 2 has long carried a beta label — test your restores.
Common questions
Does Duplicati do image backups?
No — it does file and folder backup. For full disk images use Macrium or Veeam.
Is data encrypted before it leaves the machine?
Yes — it is encrypted client-side with AES-256 before upload.
